# Remove.bg Review (2026)

Remove.bg is the name most people know for AI background removal. You drop in a photo, it returns a transparent PNG with the subject cut out — no Photoshop wand required. It works, and for portraits it works well.

But there's one fact that changes how you should treat it in 2026 — and it's stated plainly on remove.bg's own homepage:

⚠️ The standalone remove.bg site shuts down on 2026-12-01 (09:00 CET) and merges into "Canva Drawing" — Canva's in-app drawing module, not the standalone canva.com/features/background-remover page. If you're building a long-term tool stack — or recommending a tool to readers — point them at Canva, not at the standalone site.

# Experience source (honest label)

Live-verified 2026-09-07, real Chrome session from a China-region IP. Every screenshot in this review was taken in a real browser. We tested with a 4 KB sample image (test_subject.png); the cutout completed in 4–5 seconds end-to-end (upload → result page load). All other figures (free credit count, paid-plan list, Canva card wording) were captured verbatim from the remove.bg homepage, result page, and /pricing page in the same session.

# What we verified live (2026-09-07)

From the live site (Chrome, China IP):

  • Shutdown notice (homepage banner, ZH locale): "remove.bg's cutout feature is about to be moved to Canva Drawing. Starting from 9:00 AM Central European Time on December 1, 2026, the independent website will be unavailable." (The EN locale compresses the same sentence to: "The standalone website will no longer be available from 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET.")
  • "Edit in Canva" widget is pushed to the center of the result page above the transparent PNG — white pill, Canva logo, "Edit in Canva" label.
  • Result page editor toolbar (5 tools): Cutout / Background / Effects / Adjust / Design + Download on the right.
  • Free tier: 1 free credit to start; lower-resolution output gated at ~0.25 MP.
  • Paid tiers (CN-region, captured from /pricing):
    • Pay-as-you-go: starts at CN¥20 for 3 credits (≈ ¥6.67/credit). The page prints in red: "Credits expire December 1, 2026 9:00 AM CET" — use them or lose them.
    • Subscription Plan: starts at CN¥59 / month for 40 credits (≈ ¥1.48/credit, recurring). Includes "AI Photo editor" (Remove background, Erase & restore, Max quality exports) and "Automation" (API and integrations, Bulk editing, "Everything in Pro, plus"). Enterprise custom volume above 100,000 images/year.
    • Canva card (prominent, purple-bordered): "The same one-click background remover you know and love. Free to try in HD and part of Canva's Visual Suite." CTA: purple "Try Canva for Free" button. For API customers, the page redirects to Leonardo.ai for API pricing — i.e. remove.bg's API business migrates to Leonardo.ai, not Canva.
  • Processing time, our run: 4–5 seconds for a small test image (upload → transparent PNG result page). This is in line with vendor marketing; remove.bg is the speed benchmark in this category.

Honesty note: we tested on a single small image, on a single connection, on a single day. Your time will vary with image size, network, and server load. The 4–5s figure is honest — it's the time our one test took, not a guarantee.

# The shutdown — what it means for you

Three takeaways from the live site:

  1. The product is moving, not dying. The cutout tech is being folded into Canva Drawing (Canva's in-app drawing module). It will still exist; it just won't exist at remove.bg anymore.
  2. The result page pushes Canva hard. The "Edit in Canva" button is front and center the moment your cutout finishes. remove.bg is being repositioned as a funnel into Canva, not as a standalone tool.
  3. Pay-as-you-go credits die with the site. If you've bought credits, spend them before 2026-12-01 09:00 CET. After that, the standalone site is gone and the credits go with it. (Subscription credits under the same date-based policy unless Canva migrates your plan.)

Practical take:

  • Need a cutout today? remove.bg still works for about two months (until 2026-12-01). Fine to use — but don't build a long-term dependency on the standalone site.
  • Building a tool stack / recommending to readers? Go straight to Canva — that's where the product is headed. The Canva card on the pricing page says it's "free to try in HD" for the basic cutout, so the entry cost is zero.
  • Need an API? The pricing page points API customers to Leonardo.ai. That's where the API business migrates.
  • Want to avoid the Canva bundle entirely? See alternatives below.

# Alternatives (if you'd rather not depend on Canva)

  • Photoroom — commercial background remover, polished mobile + web.
  • rembg (Python, open source) — fully local, offline, no cloud dependency. Best for privacy / batch.
  • Hugging Face Spaces cutout models (RMBG, ISNet) — free, no login, self-hostable.

Region note: screenshots were taken from a China IP. USD prices on the remove.bg site render dynamically per region (US tier ≈ $9 / 40 credits, $39 / 200, $89 / 500 from earlier web checks). The CN tier shown above is what a Chinese user sees today.

Affiliate note: remove.bg has had an affiliate program, but with the standalone site closing it may lapse. We have not added it to our affiliate plan — the link below goes to the tool itself, not a commission path.

ToolPrize is reader-supported. Links above may be affiliate links; they don't affect rankings — a tool has to be useful before it lands on this list. Experience sources are labeled per tool; this review was verified by a real Chrome session on 2026-09-07 (CN-region), and the 4–5s processing time reflects our single test image, not a benchmark.
